The Story

AMIxAMIE

AMIxAMIE (formerly am.i) is the solo project of Dr. Amirthan Sothivannan, who mixes their smooth vocals infused with flavours of Indian classical music, poetic writing, and  musical influences from The Weeknd, Miguel, The Neptunes, and Frank Ocean to produce a unique ethereal R&B sound.

Amirthan trained extensively in Carnatic (South Indian and Sri Lankan) classical music, but were surrounded by Orchestral, Jazz, Hip-Hop, R&B, Broadway, Pop, and Punk music. They performed as a cover artist for the Tamil community and won several local awards for their vocal talent. They expanded into R&B and pop music when they were 16 years old and continued to sing and produce since. Amirthan is also a practicing resident physician in internal medicine.

AMIxAMIE's music deconstructs R&B, taking its beautiful and soulful themes and mixing it with modern hip-hop beats. They combine it with their unique poetic writing and musical constructions to produce a unique sound with hints of their rich cultural background.

Their first original album, Bleeding was released in 2018 and was featured on several blogs, radio shows, and Spotify playlists, including 93.3 CMFU-FM, the Broadtube Music Channel, and Eternity Network. "Sothivannan showcases his wide range of vocal talent through his emotionally engaged lyrics, often intensely so, while remaining cool, relaxed, and in control," says CFMU-FM blogger Vanessa Polojac. In 2020, they released a charity single for the COVID-19 pandemic with fellow independent artist rania saxena, and featured on Sonevos's debut house single, "Images".

In 2024, Amirthan returned to their Carnatic roots, presenting his Arangetram (a debut full concert) in November. They split their time performing Carnatic music and building new sounds to release in the near future.
